Interview with Deathspawner - Former Warcry Admin

This interview is being conducted with Deathspawner, the former site manager for the lineage 2 warcry network. I got to know Deathspawner around the time of the Tsunami when we ran our "Guides for Tsunami relief" contest.

Deathspawner was one of the few Lineage 2 webmasters who supported our efforts to raise money for Tsunami victims.

Hi Deathspawner, thanks for taking the time to talk with me. I have to admit I don't do a lot of interviews but this is one topic that I think a lot of people are interested in getting some closure for. Namely your departure about 1 month ago as site manager for lineage 2 on the warcry network is still making some ripples. I'm going to keep this pretty informal so feel free to direct this interview as you like, cool?

Sounds good to me.

Let's start with some general background info. What did you do for warcry and when did you first start working with them?

I first joined WarCry in September 2002 to help out with their Asheron's Call site. AC is the first MMO I played that I truly got addicted to, and I still play it today. I enjoyed the game so much, that I wanted to help out the website, since I visited it every day.

When I joined the Network, it was a modest size, and had a few cool fansites. Since then, it's gotten much larger, and is one of the biggest MMO devoted networks. I was invited by the Site Manager at the time, who I e-mailed some information about the game to. She then asked me if I wanted to join the staff.

Early in the next year, Lineage II was starting to get the hype it deserved, and that spawned a need for a head to the Lineage site. I was asked if I would consider heading that site, which I promptly agreed to. It all started from here.

On July 1st, you "officially" left the warcry network. At the time I remember reading their farewell message and it seemed to me that by mutual agreement you were leaving on good terms. Lately there's been a lot posted and talked about that in fact the break up was not amicable and in fact you were fired? What's the truth of the matter?

I have not had the chance to check the site very much since my departure, but I know there are a lot of half-truths going around. I don't want to get into things too much, but it was primarily due to disagreements between myself and the administration at WarCry that my time there is at an end.

I'd be lying if I said there weren't any hard feelings and I do have some regrets on my part. I've never been good at keeping my frustrations bottled up and I was fired by WarCry over what I guess you can say were irreconcilable differences. It was a very quick departure that took me by surprise but in the end I'm thankful for the good times and the many friends I made there.

Even with what has occurred, I don't hold any ill-will towards anyone at the Network, and I apologize for things I have said and opinions I voiced that upset some people. To the current Lineage staff, I wish them all the best.

I've got to ask, there's been a few official posts and some rumors floating around about a former staff member's IP being used to do some less than respectable things to the warcry server. Any comments?

Hah, no comment on that one save to say I'm not going anywhere near it. Once again I really don't hold any ill-will towards Warcry and Themis group and wish them the best of luck. I'm leaving behind many staff and friends at warcry who were absolutely great and will be missed. I still play whenever I get the chance so if you see me, don't hesitate to send me over a "what's up?".

I know you're not able to post on warcry anymore as you were banned from the forums. Is there anything you'd like to say to them and/or the community now?

I'd like to thank the entire L2 Community for the great times. I first played Lineage II back in Korean Beta, and was involved intensly with the game and community up until the departure. There were good times, and there were headaches. All in all, the entire L2 experience has been nothing but great memories, and I'll never forget any of it. I'm happy to see that the game is still thriving, it even exceeded my very own expectations!

So what are your plans now that you're no longer with warcry? I guess you've got quite a bit more time on your hands now. Are you still playing Lineage 2 often and/or doing any website development?

I have not had the time to play L2 as much as I'd like in the past few months due to other projects I am working on. I look forward to playing more in the future though, especially when C4 rolls around.. I can't wait to see it! I'm not currently working on any MMO related projects at the moment, but am focusing primarily on my PC Technology website. I may be gone from WarCry, but I'll always be on the interweb in some form or another.

Ok DS, thanks for your time, it's been a pleasure.

No problem, it was fun and thanks to you too.
